Family Planning Tasmania Joins Forces with YFCC and DECYP School Nurses for Devonport Youth Week event

Youth, Family & Community Connections (YFCC) and Family Planning Tasmania recently collaborated to make a positive impact on North West Coast youth at the YFCC Devonport Youth Event. This event occurred on 4th May 2023 as part of Youth Week 2023. Held at the Devonport Paranaple Centre, the event attracted students from four high schools and numerous service providers, creating an environment for learning, engagement, and fun activities.

At the event, students were given the opportunity to hear from a panel of inspiring youth leaders who shared their experiences and insights. The goal was to encourage the students to connect with various service providers and discover how these organisations could assist them in their daily lives.

To contribute to the event’s success, Family Planning Tasmania staff and the Department of Education, Children and Young People (DECYP) School Nurses set up an interactive stall with games and resources.

NW School Nurse Manager Ann Bingham and school nurses Debbie Knightley, Leah Furley, and Alex Clark joined Family Planning Tasmania staff member Judy Brown in actively engaging with the students. The collaborative effort aimed to educate students about their health and well-being, focusing on sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and their prevention.

The Fishing Game proved to be an excellent choice for the stall, as it effectively addressed the main objective of “Where can students seek help?” This engaging activity allowed for meaningful conversations between the staff members and the students, facilitating the exchange of valuable information. By participating in the game, students were able to expand their knowledge about STIs and learn about the available resources for seeking help.

The event attracted a significant turnout, with an estimated attendance of 310 to 350 individuals. Among them, 143 students actively engaged with the stall and benefited from the interactive activities provided by FPT and DECYP School Nurses.

The partnership between YFCC, FPT, and DECYP School Nurses exemplifies the collective effort to support young people in their journey towards a healthy and informed life. By combining resources, expertise, and a shared commitment to youth well-being, these organizations were able to create a positive impact at the Devonport Youth Week Expo.

Family Planning Tasmania extends its gratitude to YFCC and DECYP School Nurses for their collaboration and to all the students and service providers who participated in the event. Together, we can continue to empower young individuals, promote sexual health education, and foster a supportive community for our future generations.
