Pregnancy Options

Around one in three women has an unplanned or unexpected pregnancy at some time in their life.

Unplanned pregnancy can leave some people feeling confused and scared, whereas others may feel happy and excited… all these feelings are normal.

Pregnant people have a number of options, and for some making a decision about the pregnancy can be difficult and confusing.

For those who are unsure about their decision, we offer non-judgmental, compassionate and confidential pregnancy counselling. Our pregnancy counselling sessions provide factual information about all the options available to support you to make a decision.

Family Planning is a pro-choice organisation, which means we support individuals to make their own choices. All our doctors and nurses will help you if you decide to choose a termination (abortion).

Please contact us to make a pregnancy options appointment (30 minutes with either a doctor or nurse).

It can also be helpful to talk about your options with people who are close to you – your partner, a friend or a family member.

What are my options?

If you are pregnant, you have a range of options. The choice is up to you.

These options are:

  • continue with the pregnancy and raise the child
  • place the child for adoption
  • terminate the pregnancy (have an abortion)

Family Planning Tasmania believes in everyone’s right to choose and we will support you no matter what your decision. We can help you with referrals whichever option you decide on, and if you are having trouble making a decision we will give you as much information as possible to help you make the choice that is right for you.
